Characters in our film

When we were thinking of a story line, we decided that we liked the idea of the movie run fat boy run therefore when we were planning our film we decided to take notes on the stuff we liked from that film and decided that we were going to use that in our film. For example we liked the idea of this fat bloke who couldn’t run and wanted to lose weight therefore we developed this idea into a fat bloke who constantly gets bullied by his friends and therefore he wanted to do something about it.

Moreover, we decided that we were going to have one main character and two friends who used to take the mick out of him but not to the extent that he no longer wanted to be their friend. But however made him want to do something about his weight and that is where we came up with the idea that he was going to be this fat man in a pub to a man who motivated himself to lose weight and had always wanted to be a footballer and really wanted to score the winning goal. The whole opening and characters derived from the film listed above.

The main character we had in mind was the person who is sipping his pint and the two people next to him were supposed to be his friends. The fat man however will not look as old as the person shown in the image. He will be a fat man who will motivate himself in order for him to live a healthier lifestyle.

 

 

 

The two friends are going to look like the two featured in the image to the left. The image is taken from the famous TV series Only Fools and Horses. The two characters are going to be a bit slow/dumb as we believe this will be humorous for the audience.

 

 

We are going to have these characters in our opening as we believe it will create a humorous atmosphere for the audience as there will be two skinny people and one fat man in the middle who needs to lose some weight.

What we need to consider when developing our film

What we need to consider when developing our film

When developing our film we need to consider the audience beforehand. For example, due to the fact it is a comedy we need the audience to be laughing at certain things within the film. For example in the scene where we are going to have our main character struggling to run we are going to make it look like the actor is dying as this will make the audience laugh, also because it is a dark comedy the audience should laugh when they really shouldn’t be, for example the statement above. Also we need to consider the use of lighting, camera, and costume.

The type of camera angles/shots you see in a comedy;

·         The camera is very natural and follows the characters.

·         Usually high shots are used in a comedy to capture the whole event that is happening in that scene.

·         Medium shots are used in a comedy to catch all of the characters expressions within the shot.

The use of lighting is important within a comedy as you do not want a dark atmosphere as this means that it will be showing generic conventions of a horror. Therefore within a comedy, you want to see light, spacious areas to film as this is what you typically see in a comedy. Also we need to consider whether the lighting is appropriate for the audience to see it visibly. For example;

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Costume is also another thing that we need to consider when developing our film as we do not want to use the completely wrong costumes as the audience will get confused as to what genre it is. Therefore in order for the audience to understand the genre we are going to have our actors wearing not really bright colours but a variety of different ones however our main character will be wearing black as this shows that he is the one for the audience to focus on.

Diegetic – WITHIN THE CLIP

When diegetic sound is concerned, we have decided to use it throughout in the form of narrative, for example at the start our character is going to order his food from the bar and say “Hi can I have some steak and chips please and can you throw in some peanuts with that…”, we decided to use this piece of dialogue as it starts the film off and shows the audience that we are located in a pub. Also, during the pub scene we have decided to use other pieces of dialogue, we are going to make the background noise so that it can faintly be heard by the audience. The background noise will consist of people talking, we have decided to use this as we believe it will be realistic whereas if we did not use it then it would not be realistic as stereotypically in a pub you can hear other people talking.

 

Non – Diegetic - OUTSIDE

The first piece of non – diegetic sound we hear is at the start when we have our production company logo appear, we have the sound of a walrus playing over the top of it, in sync with what is going on within the clip. We have used this as we believe it is effective and adds a sense of energy to the piece. Moreover, the next piece of non-diegetic sound we hear is from the part where our main actor has just been knocked out due to him running into the tree, in this piece we decided to play a piece of sound that will make the audience understand that he has just been knocked out.

For our auditions we decided to make a little script to see what the auditions’ were like when having to read out lines, we decided to get them to say a few lines that were In our opening. For example the following characters had to say;

Main Actor: “Do you know what I’m up for that”.

Friend of main actor: “You look a bit porky mate…”

Friend of main actor: “You look a bit porky mate…”

We wanted the main actor to say the line as if they were really motivated to do something as the main actor wanted to lose weight therefore we were looking for someone who is eager to lose weight. The friends of the main character had to say the same line as they were acting as if they were licking on their friend who is the main character. This enabled us to see who the best actors were.

We decided to set a date for our auditions and this took place on the 16^th March as this was the date that all of our members could make. There are four ‘friends’ listed as we needed two but we decided to get four to audition as this would boost our chances of getting the best actor. Moreover, the people that we auditioned for the piece are displayed in the table below.

We decided that the best actors were in fact Charlie Mariner (Main Actor), Kasey Nagle and Ryan Ashwell to play the role of ‘friend’.

In order to make sure we were fully prepared for our film the night before filming we decided to lay out all of our props and costume we were going to use. We did this as we thought it would save us time when we were at the locations ready to film. We placed the costumes and props out and made sure we knew what each character had to wear and in what scene. Once we knew what they were wearing we decided to let our actors know In advance so that they were prepared and had an idea of what they were doing. Some of the props we used we had to be careful with as some of them were crockery, for example the plates and mugs we used therefore we had to handle with care. The prop we could not afford wad the football boots that the actor had to wear therefore we made use of the resources available to us and we found out that the actor actually had a pair himself. When we went to shoot our film we decided to take extra props as we believed it could come in handy if anything breaks and rips, this shows that we were organised.

Final Mise Decisions

MISE:  

Mise is very important within the opening scene as the things that we use can be seen by the viewers and also the examiner will look to see if the clothes they are wearing fit with the clip itself therefore I will be discussing our final mise decisions. 

Location:

The locations of our film will be located at three different areas, for example in the pub, on a football pitch and in a park. We are using these locations as we believe they are the quietest places to film without members of the public interfering.

For the football pitch scene our actor will be wearing a variety of clothing that will make him look like he is part of a football match – shorts, , football boots, football socks and a black jumper

 

 




The props we have decided to use vary from location to locations, for example in the pub scene there will be coffee mugs, plates and a table, they will have coffee mugs as it is based in the morning and people do not drink alcohol in the morning therefore a coffee mug is sufficient.







In the football scene the only prop that will be used is a football, this is because is order to play football you must have something to kick and without it the opening would look very unprofessional.

Final Casting Decisions

Casting

Casting is very important within a film as if you do not have the right person for that particular role then it is not going to look good therefore auditioning for the cast is essential to make sure we have the correct characters.

For our film opening we are going to have a 16 year old young man who will be playing the role of ‘fat man in the pub’. We have chosen him as we think that he fits the person we are looking for. For example, he has a sense a humour about him and looks like the person we want. Our casting plans changed from the original person we had in mind this is due to the fact we would have not been able to get that type of person as we did not know anyone like that therefore we had to choose and change some of the plans and change the type of character we were looking for. The character we chose looks like a regular young 18 year old who has just started to go to the pub, he likes to go out and enjoy himself and likes his food which link in with the type of person we want.

The original person we were looking for is on the left and then person we chose after plans had changed is on the right.










The person on the right is the correct person we are looking for in our film opening as he is within our designated casting age and he looks like the type of person we are looking for and he will be able to connect with the audience is some way as he is in the same age category as our audience.

Evaluation

By creating this opening it gave us a indication of the layout and steps we needed to take when making our own film opening sequence. As we were reflecting what was happening on the Drive opening, It showed us how a film opening should look and the different elements that need to come together for the clip to be viable. An example of this is the order of the titles as it showed us that we need the have the institutional name and logo at the very beginning of the clip. This is also reflected in the research we did on film opening titles as it told us that the Film title needs to be introduced within the first 30 seconds in which the Drive opening showed. Also this showed us the correct order that film titles needed to be in , therefore we used this information along with other research we did on film titles to incorporate into our own film opening, such as putting the main actors names a the start of the clip and the directors name right at the end of the the film opening. The different shots that were used in the Drive opening that we have to mimic gave us an understanding how different angles can be used to create effect. An example of this is showing Ryan Goslings facial expression from a close up and then a over the shoulder shot showing the atmosphere around him.  To conclude by doing this film opening remake it gave us a list of things that we had to do and consider for when we actually make our own film opening, and was a helpful way of understanding the overall layout and features involved in one, so that it would help us incorporate them into out own clip.

Institutional Logo research

Mainstream

This is an example of a mainstream company's institutional logo. The backgrounds tend to be quite powerful, for example as you can see on the left the lion is portrayed to look powerful. The logos stereotypically have rather professional logos and are often animated. For Lions Gate have an animated it to make the lion roar and have an added sound effect on top of them to make it look professional and of good standard.

 

 

·         The type of films they make tend to be very successful films and will be well known worldwide.

 

·         They film in locations that you would recognise which makes the audience feel more involved.

 

·         The type of actors are well known which as a result attract to a larger audience often referred to as a mass audience.

 

Independent films

This is an example of an Independent institutional logo. other film institution. Their logos  consist of a simple design. Moreover, independent films do not often use any type of animation or sound over the top of their logo. This gives the logo a more simplistic look.

 

·         Logos tend to be smaller, like the one below.

·         Independent is a lot less due to not being given a lot of money in comparison to mainstream institutions.

·         Independent film companies often target niche audiences whereas mainstream institutions tend to target mass audiences.

There are a number of people I would get to play the role of ‘fat man in pub’ this is because there are a variety of different people to choose from. However the three I have chosen that could play the part. The potential people are listed below;

1.      The first potential actor we have chosen that could effectively play the part is james Cordon, this is because he looks like the kind of actor we are going for, he is also a very funny man and has done some acting parts, presenting and a bit of stand of comedy which makes him perfect for the role.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2.      Our second candidate is Peter Kay, we have chosen him as we believe he looks like the person we are going for and he is a comedian anyway which helps.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

3.      Johnny Vegas – we have chosen Johnny as he resembles the person that we want to play the part. He has also starred in a Benidorm and is rather humorous on that show which is exactly what we want. He is also a stand-up comedian which is also a bonus considering our genre is comedy. Also Johnny is not very well groomed which is good as that is the typical pub person which makes it more realistic.

Above is the film title that we have chosen for our film. We have chosen this title as we believe it relates to our film opening in the best way possible. The kick part of the title comes from the fact our main actor has to score the winning penalty in his dream therefore the kick relates to that part. The 'Ultimate' section comes from whether he scores the kick or not, the 'ultimate' is meant to mean that this will either make or break him. So if he scores then it will change his life forever but if he doesn't then it would put him in a state of depression.

Final costume decisions

The clothing below are the costumes our main character is going to wear. The jumper, jeans and black shoes are going to be worn when out main character is in the pub. He will be wearing those clothes throughout all scenes in the pub and the one outside the pub where he looks at the poster. We have chosen these clothes for the Pub scenes as we believe the use of the black jumper creates a casual look as if he has just gone down his local pub for some food and drink, the use of the baggy jeans makes our actor looking larger, this is the effect we want as our storyline is about a fat man who is in need to lose weight and lastly we chose this shoes as they contrast well with the other colours. We chose this clothing as we believed it would create a realistic look for the audience and create a more homely feel to the opening sequence. Moreover, for the football scenes we decided to dress up our character in clothing that shows he is trying to lose weight. Therefore we decided to make our actor wear black Nike shorts, this is because the use of the Nike branding is a sport brand which connotes that he is taking part in exercise to try and lose weight. the use of the football socks also connote he is doing exercise to try and lose weight and lastly and the football boots also connote the same thing.
