Audience figures and popular films in our genre

Popular films and Audience figures

The films below are the films that are similar to our one as they are share the same genre which is comedy. We believe that if we look at the different films in the same genre as us it could potentially help to improve out film and see if we can take any notes on the parts we think we could potentially fit into our film. We believe the following films are popular in out genre and therefore decided to research how successful they were and the amount they made.

21 Jump Street

Storyline - “In high school, Schmidt (Jonah Hill) was a dork and Jenko (Channing Tatum) was the popular jock. After graduation, both of them joined the police force and ended up as partners riding bicycles in the city park. Since they are young and look like high school students, they are assigned to an undercover unit to infiltrate a drug ring that is supplying high school student’s synthetic drugs. Written by Douglas Young (the-movie-guy)

21 jump street was released in 3148 theatres worldwide therefore it was always going to be a successful film. It also managed to make £201m in the opening weekend and was very successful globally and has very good reviews.

Shaun of the Dead

Storyline – “Shaun doesn't have a very good day, so he decides to turn his life around by getting his ex to take him back, but he times it for right in the middle of what may be a zombie apocalypse... But for him, it's an opportunity to show everyone he knows how useful he is by saving them all. All he has to do is survive... And get his ex-back.”

Shaun of the dead was released in only 607 theatres so compared to 21 jump street it is significantly less. Shaun of the dead managed to turn over £30m worldwide which is good considering the lack of theatres they released it in. compared to 21 jump street they made considerably less however Shaun of the dead is a smaller film.

40 Year Old Virgin

Storyline – “Andy at the age of 40 still hasn't had sex. He lets his secret slip at a poker game with his buds from work. After the revealing all his friends are on a mission to help get him laid. Along the way Andy meets a nice mom: Trish who fall head over heels for each other. Written by Kris Hopson

40 year old virgin was released 2845 theatres worldwide which is in between 21 Jump Street and Shaun of the dead. It also managed to turn over £177m worldwide which is a lot and is very similar to the amount 21 jump street made.

Our Film Certification

We would like to give our film a certification rating of 15, this is due to the content that we are going to use. for example we  are:
  • Going to use a variety of language that we believe is not appropriate for people under the age of 15.
  • The use of drug intake/reference
  •  Light use of sexual references
  • Potential dangerous behaviour (drunk and disorderly)
All of the above are the reasons for giving out film the 15 rating as we believe this is the correct rating when  I researched on the 'BBFC' website I looked at the different certifications and when we compare what we are going to use in our film it is rather similar therefore giving it this certification is a good guess.

Moodboard on the look of our audience members

Mind map of our target audience

Mind map of our target audience

We are primarily aiming our movie at the age group of 15 year olds, this is down to us believing that our movie would best appal to this audience due to the content we wish to create compared with the criteria of the 15 year old certification. Here is the list of the criteria of which we are allowed to go by when creating a movie for people of the age of 15 and above:

·         strong violence

·         frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***').

·         portrayals of sexual activity

·         strong verbal references to sex

·         sexual nudity

·         brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence

·         discriminatory language or behaviour

·         drug taking

We believe that our movie will follow these guidelines when creating our movie, making sure that we do not stray from these specific rules so that our movie can be a success with that age group, as if we include content that is not in the age 15 category, then there is a less chance of our movie being less of a success.

We are predominantly aiming at the male audience, this is due to the extensive research that we have conducted around the comedy genre and also movies that are quite similar in respect to the content, such as ‘Run, fatboy run’ and also ‘Shaun of the Dead’. We have found out that the male audience is more attracted to this kind of content and therefore, we will be mainly aiming our movie at the male audience by including male characters inside of a pub and also, the whole storyline, about football, of which the female audience would be less attracted to, due to the connotations of the game of football. Although there is female football, these are the exception, as some females may be interested in the sport activities that take place in the movie.

Another reason for making the movie appeal to the male audience is that we are going to include various female characters, which will ensure that the audience we aim for is male, this is due to the ‘male gaze theory’ by Laura Mulvey. The theory suggests the different views of the female body to entice the male audience, of which we hope to create so that we have a more directed audience and so that it makes the audience more attracted to our movie.

Heath and safety

Health and safety

When we are filming there a lot of precautions we need to consider, such as:

·         Location

·         Equipment/props

·         Costume/costumes

The location has been considered with the safety in mind, for example we had three different locations that we could potentially film in. however, we chose the location we did because it is away from a main road where as our other two locations were near main roads which we believed were unsafe as the cars drive up and down them roads at high speeds which would put not only us at risk but also our characters therefore we chose what we believed was the safest location.

Equipment/props – when we were making our final decisions on our equipment we had to decide what ones we thought would be safe. For example we are going to use a plastic beer cup instead of a glass one as we believe it will be a lot safer as if we dropped the glass cup it could cause injury to us and the actors/actresses therefore a plastic one means no one is put at risk.

Costume/costumes – when we were deciding our costume we chose clothes that would not necessarily hurt the character but irritate them. We chose costumes that we thought would be comfortable for the character to wear therefore by dressing them in a t shirt, jeans and a pair of comfortable shoes would mean that they would be comfortable when acting.

Target audience

Generic Conventions of a Comedy

Generic Conventions of a Comedy

Camera:
The camera is very natural and follows the characters.
Usually high shots are used in a comedy to capture the whole event that is happening in that scene.
Medium shots are used in a comedy to catch all of the characters expressions within the shot.

Iconography:
Bright colours such as blue, yellow are the most common colours used in a comedy as they are fun and happy.
Regarding the lighting it is most often very bright and shot during the day time.
And wit the props that are used, there are usually sports equipment such as footballs, golf clubs for example which will be used for comedic use such as humorous accidents, and also the most generic one  being a banana skin on the floor.

Characters:
Idiotic, very stupid, accident prone
Smart, socially awkward
Regular people, accidents occur around them - sarcastic

Themes:
Anarchic comedy
Parody
Romantic comedy
Screwball comedy
Slapstick
Sports comedy

Casting

Casting

Casting is very important within a film as if you do not have the right person for that particular role then it is not going to look good therefore auditioning for the cast is essential to make sure we have the correct characters.

For our film opening we are looking for an adult male within the age bracket of 30 -40’s this is because we are filming it in a pub and a lot of people of that age group go to pubs. We are looking for your ‘average’ punter. For example, below are the type of people we are looking for:

This is the type of person we are looking for in our film opening as he is within our designated casting age and he looks like the type of person we are looking for as he looks like he is carrying a bit of weight and that is exactly what we want as we are looking for someone who is a little overweight.

Moodboard

What will our film include and its look?

Our film will include various forms of funny actions within the clip as we have opted to do a comedy film. This mood board reflects a range of funny actions in which our film will include such as the picture of the fat man and fairly average weight man at the bottom will be reflected through our clip as it involves a fat person getting the mick taking out for being overweight by skinny people.

Mise en scene consideration

MISE:

Consider Mise – make notes on what would be in the frame in each scene of the scene and why (include images of how you want the overall film to look).

Mise is very important within the opening scene as these features need to be relevant to what the actual film would be about, as things such as the location and clothing set the scene for the film.

Location:

·         Pub

·         Football pitch

·         Park

Clothing for park and football pitch scene – shorts, jogging bottoms, football boots, trainers, sweat band

Clothing for pub scene – The blokes in the pub will be wearing casual clothes like jeans and plains tops like you're average punter.

For props we will need a load of pint glasses for each of the punters giving the intention to the audience that they are drinking.

Costume

Main Character’s costume

Our character will wear a t-shirt like the one on the right. This is because our character likes beer and by wearing this t-shirt it adds a sense of humour.

Our main character will wear a pair of jeans like the ones to the right. This is because the stereotypical punter wears a pair of jeans like these and they are just plain and simple which fits nicely with our film opening.

Our character will wear the air max shoe like the one on the right. This is because it is just a plain black pair of shoes and will go well with the t-shirt he is wearing.

Final Location

Location: Places to film

The main place of which we will film will be inside of a pub, where the cast will be mainly focused inside of the pub, sitting on seats around a table.

The first, and most ideal location would be the ‘Leather Bottle' which is located in Great Waltham. This would be ideal because the look of the pub from outside best fits our theme of our film as it looks very authentic and classic looking due to the colours of the building and also the front door is a dark red colour with bevelled glass which once again makes the pub have a classic pub look. The windows of the pub are set in a white frame where the wooden parts of the window frame are in a gridded design which makes the pub have a very typical pub look which would be great for when we are filming as it would be easier to identify that the building is a pub from the outside. This is the one we are going to use due to the look of the pub.
